Following on from our update on the 17th October, we're keen to share progress out on the course as part of this year's winter programme.
The weather has been kind, which has allowed for great progress so far.
General Updates:
* Regularly removed leaves from greens, tees, bunkers, fairways, rough and paths.
* Used vibrating rollers on the greens to aid recovery from aeration.
* Cut tees, green surrounds and fairways.
* Regularly raked bunkers and changed holes.
* Verti-cut and double cut winter greens weekly.
* Prepared winter tee mats for play.
Fertilising:
* Greens - fertilising complete - a liquid fertiliser and fungicide have been applied.
* Tees - fertilising complete - a granular fertiliser has been applied to the tees.
Aeration
* Greens & Tees
All green & tees have been cored and cleared.
All greens & tees have been scarified and cleared.
All greens & tees have been verti-drained.
* Fairways
5 % of fairways have been verti-drained.
Overseeding & Sanding:
* Greens
A fescue mix applied has been applied along with extra seed applied to oil scarring on green. Approximately 2 tonnes of LMC sand has been applied to each green.
* Tees
A rye grass mix has been applied to each tee. Once the overseeding has been completed a sand dressing will then be applied.
Turfing & Tree Work:
* Turfing
Bare areas around the course were identified. These areas had been cut out and removed in preparation to re-turf. Turfing has now been completed with areas marked as ground under repair.
* Tree Work
Work has started to reduce the height of scrub in front of the 3rd, 5th and 8th tees.
We've also started to obtain prices to carry out significant limb removal at 4th, 5th, 11th and 12th.
Next steps:
We'll continue to keep providing updates and keeping everything crossed that we can keep up this great progress on our winter programme.
Notice is hereby given that the Annual Subscription Meeting will be held on 12th December at 7 pm at Glencorse Golf Club.
As we move into the winter season after another fantastic year at Glencorse, we would like to thank each of you for your continued support and commitment to the club. Together, we’ve enjoyed many memorable rounds, social events, and new connections.
To continue enhancing our course, facilities, and services, we propose a modest increase in membership fees for 2025. This adjustment will allow us to make essential upgrades and improvements to secure the future of our club.
Membership Fee Changes for 2025: Beginning in the new membership year, we propose a £50 increase to Full Membership fees, bringing the total to £814. This total includes a membership fee of £795, the Scottish Golf subscription of £17.50, and the Lothian Golf subscription of £1.50 (if applicable). All other membership categories will also increase by the same percentage of 6.57%, except for Junior memberships. Junior (age 5-14) memberships will increase to £40, and Junior (age 15-18) memberships will increase to £70.
Additionally, monthly locker fees and trolley shed fees will both increase by £5.
It is also proposed that the Senior category will be closed to new category members from the beginning of the 2025 season. This means that anyone who is currently in the senior category will remain, but no further members can join that category. This is to safeguard the club for future generations.
Where Your Investment Will Go: This fee increase will support several key projects and improvements, including (but not exhaustive):
* Bridge Repairs and Upgrades: Ensuring safe and attractive bridges around the course.
* Tree Maintenance: Carefully managed tree work to preserve the health, appearance and playability of the course.
* New Machinery: A necessary investment of £47,000 in updated machinery to keep our course in optimal playing condition.
* Dredging and Erosion Control: Vital dredging of the burn and shoring of its sides to prevent erosion and maintain this beautiful feature.
* Potential Recruitment of an Additional Greenkeeper: The recruitment of an apprentice to provide even more consistent care to our course and facilities.
* Clubhouse Flat Refurbishment: Refurbishing the clubhouse flat to maximise the potential rental value and thus create additional revenue, supporting the club for years to come.
Each of these projects reflects our commitment to delivering a quality experience on the course and a welcoming clubhouse environment for all members. Your support makes these long-term improvements possible, ensuring Glencorse remains a top choice for golfers in our community.
Our goal remains to make Glencorse Golf Club a place we all take pride in and look forward to visiting time and again.
This proposal will be discussed and ratified at the Subscription Meeting on 12th December 2024. If there are any counter proposals these should be submitted in writing to the Secretary by 28th November 2024.

If any prize winner is unable to attend please send an email to Ben Cartwright ( Managing Secretary ) advising this and an apology will be read out for you on the evening.
As we enter the autumn season, we understand that fallen leaves can sometimes make it challenging to locate your ball. To combat this, we will be implementing the 'Leaf Rule'.
The Leaf Rule allows players who lose a ball in accumulated leaves, in an area where it would normally be found (e.g. the fairway), to take a free drop. If your ball is lost in such conditions, and your playing partner(s) agree, you may drop another ball, without penalty, at the point where the ball is deemed to have landed. Please ensure that this point is not nearer to the hole.
This is covered under R&A Rule 16.1 which allows a player to take free relief if their ball is not found and it is "known or virtually certain" it came to rest "in an abnormal course condition".
This rule also applies to balls that are lost because they are plugged (e.g left of the 14th and the bank on the 18th)
We appreciate your cooperation and understanding. Should you have any questions or need further clarification, please get in touch.

On Monday the 14th of October we will start the Autumn aeration programme by hollow coring, scarifying, overseeding and sanding the greens.
We will use 13mm diameter hollow core tines to remove cores from the greens to a depth of approximately 45mm. Then, using 4mm wide blades we will scarify to an approximate depth of 10mm. These two operations combined, will result in maximum thatch removal from the area in the greens where most thatch will accumulate throughout the growing period.
It will also provide a good seed bed for overseeding with a mixture of fescue cultivars, which will follow. Approximately 1 tonne of sand will be applied to each green and brushed into the surface immediately after the overseeding, and then again, the following week.
From Monday the 28th of October we will verti-drain all the greens using 13mm diameter solid tines to an approximate depth of 30cm. Sand applications will continue to be applied throughout the autumn months to ensure all holes are filled to the surface.
Members are asked to be extra vigilant if playing between Monday 14th to Wednesday 16th, as the Greens Staff will be working on the Main Greens. The Winter Greens will be in play, but as they are situated close to the main greens, please take care when playing to a hole the team are working on. The safety of our staff is paramount and we thank you in anticipation of your understanding and cooperation in this matter

Last year’s winter programme was severely curtailed due to the weather conditions with many objectives in aeration, tree work, turfing and path renovation not being completed. It is therefore our intention to prioritise these outstanding items in this year’s programme.
The sections below provide an outline of the programme and the projected dates.
Ian Bell & The Greenkeeping Team
Fertilising
Prior to the start of the aeration programme, we will apply a mixture of liquid fertiliser, wetting agent, fungicide and seaweed to the greens. This will, increase the recovery rate following the hollow coring and scarifying, aid seed germination, help maintain a dry surface and reduce the potential for disease incidence.
The same will be applied to the tees, except for the fertiliser which will be in granular form.
The safety of our staff is paramount and we thank you in anticipation of your understanding and cooperation in this matter.
Tees, Fairways and Approaches
Assuming all scheduled work to the greens goes to plan we will carry out the same coring, scarifying, overseeding and sanding procedures to the tees the week beginning the 21st of October.
The verti-draining will again also be carried out when the greens have been completed.
A balanced decision on when to stop play from the tees and use the winter tee mats will be taken from this time onwards and will very much be dependent on the underfoot conditions.
On completing the tees, we will then look to verti-drain all green approaches and fairways before concentrating on localised wet areas throughout the course.
Turfing
Unfortunately, this was one aspect of last year’s programme where we were unable to carry out our intended improvements and had to be content with heavily fertilising worn areas to increase grass cover.
We intend to lay turf in the following areas, approach to the concrete bridge over the ditch at the 2nd, approach to the path from the 4th green to the 5th tee, leaving the path towards the 6th tee and approaching the path to the right of the 10th green.
We have, in the past, been reluctant to lay turf in the bare areas behind the 5th green and to the right of the bunker and green at the 8th as we felt it had little chance of surviving due to the close proximity of the mature trees. However, as this year has been so wet the grass coverage, with the aid of a significant amount of fertiliser, has improved such that turfing the small areas left without grass is worth trying.
Along with small, selected areas around bunkers and on green surrounds we intend to carry out this renovation work prior to the Christmas break as this will give the turf the best opportunity to establish and hopefully survive through the playing season next year.
Tree Work
Again, unfortunately this is another category of the winter programme which we were unable to complete but will endeavour to do so this time round. The scrub on the bankings in front of the 3rd, 5th and 8th tees have reached such a height that not only are they having an impact on tee shots but also the view of the hole.
This work was carried out a few years ago and we will look to significantly reduce the height of the scrub again but also leave sufficient growth to ensure stability of the bankings.
We will look to employ the services of a tree surgeon to carry out the following limbing work:
• the boundary trees and scrub to the right of 4th tees (to make use of the medal tee again)
• to the left of the 4th green
• behind the 5th green
• along the burn at the 1st, 11th and 12th.
The remains of the storm damage from last winter, which is still evident in the plantations on the top half of the course, will be cleared and removed.
Stephen Lamb is again kindly donating trees which will be planted mostly in the gaps left in the plantations.
Drainage
The right-hand side of the 6th green and the surrounding area have caused some problems this year during heavy rainfall.
There is a drain installed in this area and it is our intention to open this up and inspect the pipework and outlet and make any alterations which will improve the drainage capabilities.
Paths
We recently used concrete and whin dust to repair the paths which regularly suffer from puddling due to leaf drop and the extremely wet conditions which we experience these days.
It is our intention to dress the surface of these paths and bridge ramps with whin dust, concentrating firstly on the areas where the whin dust has worn down and exposed the type 1 hardcore underneath.
Bunkers
It has been a few years since we have been in a position to improve the condition of the bunkers but this year, with the help of Stephen Lamb, we intend to re-shape the base of the bunkers at the 1st, 2nd, 10th and 12th, while also re-turfing the faces where required.
We consider many bunkers on the course to slope quite significantly from back to front, which makes getting the ball up and over the face quite a challenge. We would like to rectify this by removing the sand, reshaping the soil base and putting an appropriate amount of sand back in.
Summary
Due to the significant increase in rainfall, it is becoming clearer every year that all forms of aeration and sanding are a vital part of the maintenance of the golf course, and therefore this will always be regarded as the main priority in our autumn renovation work.
Our aim is to complete this section along with turfing prior to the Christmas break, while also clearing the many areas of the course affected by leaves. Our work in January and February will be slightly restricted this year as the greenstaff have been trialling summer and winter hours of working. The staff will be recovering the ‘time in lieu’ from the extended hours worked in August and September.

During the October medal we are going to trial a ‘call-up’ procedure on the 5th hole. What is expected of you ?:
* Upon reaching the green, if the golfers in the time behind are on the tee and ready to play we request you mark your golf ball, stand aside (preferably behind the green) and wave those on the tee down.
* After all their tee shots have been hit, please progress as normal and complete the hole.
If the tee time behind are not on the tee and ready to play by the time you reach the green please proceed as normal, there is no need to call them on.
